It seems that summer has at last arrived, with plenty of different species for the shore angler available from all areas including a surprisingly large number of cod, which are not only showing from the obvious rock edge marks along the Northumberland shoreline but also in the lower Tyne and from South Shields and Roker piers mainly on night time and early morning sessions.

Mackerel finally made an appearance off all of the Region's piers over the past week, and although conditions were not perfect, some big bags were taken from both Roker and South Shields piers.

This week is certainly about the lack of anglers on the beaches and piers despite the fact that there are fish there to be caught but rods have been few and far between.

Mackerel finally made an appearance for the shore angler, and as reported by recent boat anglers, many are of a good size, some topping the 2lb mark.

While freshwater anglers in South Wales and the Bristol Channel are bitterly disappointed that the Secretary of State for Energy & Climate Change has this week given development consent for the massive tidal lagoon hydropower project proposed for Swansea Bay the causeway may provide a new venue for shore anglers if access is granted.

Still no reports of any shore caught mackerel as yet, though those trying for them from the Hartlepool piers report lots of sprats showing on some tides so they are probably not too far away.

This year's EFSA Scotland Cod Championships at Arbroath turned into a real battle of the Champions as previous winners Peter Redshaw, Steve Souter, Scott Gibson, Billy Murray and Jim Henderson, as well as reigning EFSA Individual Champion, Robbie Robertson, were all drawn together on the same boat.
