Mackerel continue to be taken from the Region's piers, weather permitting, with an easterly to south easterly wind putting a little movement on the sea, sport has not been quite as good as previous weeks but there are still plenty of fish showing on most tides.

We seem to be slipping quietly into autumn, with the codling and whiting catches slowly increasing from beaches, boats and piers, and still we have all the summer species still being caught.

Settled conditions and unusually clean water brought the mackerel back inshore last week with huge numbers showing from the Hartlepool piers, particularly at North Gare which saw fish being landed throughout the entire tidal range from one low water to the next, sometimes in only a few feet of water, float tackle and lures took bags of over 60 fish on Monday and Tuesday.

The recent heavy seas of last week may not have produced much when the sea was at its heaviest, but when conditions settled down fish moved inshore in good numbers with cod to 6lb reported from several areas, and mixed bags into double figures being quite common with cod, whiting, dabs, flounders, plaice, coalfish, wrasse, and dogfish all featuring in catches.
