Settled conditions over the past few days have seen mackerel move inshore all along the local shoreline with big bags taken from all of the Region’s piers and from some of the deeper beach marks at Horden, various marks in the lower Tyne and from the rock edge marks north of the Tyne, particularly around Dunstanburgh Castle.

Just when the mackerel where starting to move back inshore and double figure bags were becoming the norm, the inevitable happened when another heavy sea arrived again to scatter them offshore.

Anglers are reporting taking some reasonable catches of premature autumn cod, which seem to arrive earlier every year, with reports of nice fresh run specimens to 8lb taken from Roker pier and from rock edge marks.

Last week’s heavy seas have died down a little at the time of writing, but a continuing Northerly wind has kept a lot of movement on the sea with a nice lazy swell evident.

Mackerel were just making a reappearance from the Hartlepool piers early last week after a short absence with Middleton and the Pilot pier both producing double figure bags.
