The Hartlepool Charter Skippers festival is well underway now with the biggest fish to date is one of 18lb 11oz which fell to Tank Bartolo. With an entry fee of only £2 per trip it seems silly not to enter as plenty of anglers have taken bigger fish than this. The Evelyn Jane has had cod of 27lb, 23lb 9oz, several around the 18lb to 21lb mark, and the best ling of 19lb, all taken by anglers who did not enter the competition. The Evelyn Jane was out on Saturday and found plenty of medium sized cod with local angler Paul “Mushy” Moore taking 40 to 12lb, all taken on shads fished on long traces, another angler had around 30 cod, and the best ling of the day was 14lb. Mackerel, coalfish, pouting, whiting, and the odd haddock all made an appearance. The boat has a new website which can be found at http://www.evelyn-jane.co.uk

The Stingray out of the Tyne had a decent trip after a slow start which produced several bigger double figure specimens, Richard Roll taking the best at 20lb 3oz and one of 17¼lb, and Ian Walker landed a rare double figure “double” with cod of 15lb and 13lb taken on the same drop. Most of the 70 plus cod taken were returned. Steve Glassy had a cod of 18lb on the Sarah JFK also out of the Tyne. Boats fishing the inshore ground north of the Tyne continue to take good numbers of smaller cod around the 4lb to 7lb mark, plus the odd pollack, coalfish, and ling.

Summer cod are showing from all of the regions piers after dark with specimens to 4lb reported from the piers at South Shields, Roker, Seaham and Hartlepool, mostly taken on fresh crab baits. South Shields is the top local shore mark with quality plaice, dabs, coalfish, cod, whiting, and the odd pollack all taking baits and lures, along with the inevitable mackerel. Tony Rutherford and Mick Burke took 15 plaice to 3lb during a recent session here with ragworm and small crab baits proving the most productive.
