Northern Bites – 27-08-2011

by Steve Walker

Settled conditions over the past few days have seen mackerel move inshore all along the local shoreline with big bags taken from all of the Region’s piers and from some of the deeper beach marks at Horden, various marks in the lower Tyne and from the rock edge marks north of the Tyne, particularly around Dunstanburgh Castle. All of the accessible Hartlepool piers have seen mackerel taking both lures and float fished baits. South Shields pier has also seen some in size coalfish and pollack taking lures with specimens to over 2lb of both species reported. Roker pier however, remains closed with repair work expected to take until December to complete.

Lots of sport to be had in the Wear as usual with large numbers of flounders, coalfish, whiting, and eels present this year. The Eastenders Wednesday evening sweepstake at Panns Bank saw all those fishing land fish. Mick Davison had the best on the night with a flounder of 34cm. There was a tie for second place with Jim Dobie, Brian Turnbull, and Paul Hossack, all having flounders of 33cm. The longest total catch was six fish for 181cm by Tommy Tate.

The Tyne also has high levels of fish present with coalfish and small cod in the lower river, and flounders in the upper reaches where huge numbers of small flounders are being reported. Mick Hardy won a recent Blyth A.C. match here with five flounders and two eels for 5lb 1oz. Keith Smith travelled to Beadnell to land a cod of 3lb 5oz and John Heron fished the Tyne to land two eels and one flounder weighing 2lb 9oz.

Hartlepool Pirates fished a catch and release match with a 20cm limit from their local piers during their last match. Bill Bradley won with 11 coalfish and four whiting weighing 7lb14oz ahead of Adam Dendrickson whose bag of four whiting, three coalfish, a mackerel, a dab and a rockling weighed 3lb 7oz. Third place went to P. Shields with seven whiting for 1lb 5oz while in fourth Steve Swales had five whiting and a Rockling weighing 1¼lb.

Tynemouth A.C. travelled to Eyemouth where the settled conditions were perfect to fish from the various deep water rock edge marks and all those fishing managed to weigh in. Gav Owen had a good session taking five wrasse, three mackerel, two coalies and a cod for an excellent total weight of 19lb 1oz, just ahead of Steve Harper who had six cod, three mackerel and two coalfish weighing 18lb 15oz. Marty Elliott had two cod, two coalfish and one pollack for 12¼lb to take third. Dave Hayley finished fourth with two cod and two wrasse weighing 11lb 10oz and the heaviest fish prize went to Paul Foster for his five pound cod.
