The mild winter weather resulted in unseasonal catches in the latest Skegness Pier Angling Club (SPAC) match, with thornback rays and lesser spotted dogfish being caught at Chapel Point. Grimsby ace Garry Hutson caught neither species, but still ended up as runaway winner of the Healey Cup, with five dabs and 14 whiting measuring 500cm in total under the catch and release format. Last match winner Dave Burr was a long way behind in second place, catching a 63cm (4lb 14oz) ray, nine whiting, a dogfish and a dab for a total length of 369cm. Another top Grimsby angler, Paul Denholm, came in third with a similar mixed bag of fish measuring 360cm. His 63cm dogfish shared the longest round fish prize with Dave Burr’s ray and to make a good day complete, Paul also shared the longest flatfish prize with Withern’s Fred Donner, both with 29cm dabs.
The SPAC AGM will be held on Saturday 20th February commencing at 7:30pm in the New Park Club, Scarborough Avenue, Skegness, PE25 2TQ. All current and prospective members are invited to attend. The annual Trophy Presentation and social event will take place immediately after the AGM, including a grand raffle and buffet.
With spring species already turning up early and winter species still hanging on, things look really good for the next SPAC match, which will be held on Sunday 21st Feb from 3 till 7pm at Moggs Eye, Chapel, with Club members fishing for the Gordon Long Cup.
