Skegness Pier Angling Club May 2015

by Chas Tibble

Top Grimsby match angler Adie Cooper was unstoppable in the Skegness Pier Angling Club (SPAC) Species Hunt, held in perfect conditions at Trunch Lane. The format was 10 points for each different species caught, then 1 point for each further fish of the same species. Adie used his long casting skills to good effect, catching 5 thornback rays, 4 dabs, 2 cod, 2 whiting, a smoothound, a flounder and a lesser spotted dogfish, to easily win the match with 79 points. To make an already good day complete, he also won the longest flatfish prize with his 36cm (1lb 3oz) flounder. Some way behind in second place was another top Grimsby angler, Karl Nangle, who caught four different species for 40 points. He also caught the largest fish on the day, an 8lb 9oz female thornback ray, which was worthy winner of the longest round fish prize. Croxton’s Dave Burr caught a twelve fish mixed bag of flatfish and whiting, but couldn’t entice that vital fourth species, finishing up in third place with 39 points.
