For the most part shore angling was poor over the Christmas week, with only odd whiting, pouting, flatties, and cod reported. Most of the early Christmas matches where won with just a few pounds. Those anglers who had quality bait and could fish at longer range generally came out best, while those with patience and prepared to fish short for flounders also managed to weigh in… http://www.planetseafishing.com/catchreports/read/northern-bites-by-steve-walker-dec-5/

Lance McVey fishing the Wherry at Marsden baited with a small rockling he had caught earlier to catch this cracking cod of 17lb 1oz. His bait had been in the water only a couple of minutes.

Live baits are very much under used in the North, but it goes to show that they work just as well as elsewhere for big fish.

Wonder if any of our other northern anglers have used similar fish live-baits from the shore? And what are your experiences?

Fished the NESA Comp last weekend, over 40 turning out on a dreary night. Sorry it’s late but I’ve just dried out lol. The comp was fished in a big SE sea and wind and very large tides (never a good combination on our shallow beaches) and it was proven when only 5 weighed in, the winner being Marty Elliot with a codling over 5lb. I plumped for the Slatey Gut, a south facing mark that caught me no fish but the wind and rain combined to clear all the loose skin off my face. Got to the weigh in to find the camera batteries were dead so no photos either. It only stopped raining when I reached Derbyshire driving home on Sunday afternoon. There’s another comp in February so I’ll try and put together a better article for that one. Anyone interested in fishing it pm me and I’ll pass on the details, if that’s OK with you admin guys.

Northern Bites by Steve Walker

The sea picked up last midweek, and coupled with bigger tides, cod up to 15lb were taken from various marks. Sport for the most part was slow however, especially in the Teesbay area where a few smaller cod prevailed. But Staincliffe did produced cod to 6lb in the South Easterly sea on Sunday….. http://www.planetseafishing.com/catchreports/read/northern-bites-by-steve-walker-dec-15/

Hi guys

Trying to put something togther on fishing for tope, if you get them in your area when do they appear and migrate off each year?

Looking to ensure that information regarding the seasonal fishing is accurate for each area. Would be useful to know if the large fish appear at different times of year to the smaller ones.

Would prefer replies by pm.
