The Cork Harbour Blues Experience

Wrote this for RSA n copied n pasted it here save re-writing it

On Saturday Mike Thrussell Snr teamed up with some very shady characters from BAI aboard Deora Dé to play the Cork Harbour Blues

Fearing the recent patchiness of mackerel, on Friday evening I got a very bad idea to send “Donegal Danny” aka Roadrunner out in his new fancy boat “Sandra Anne” to get us a good supply of mackerel… catch loads of mackerel Danny I said… well Danny how many have you caught I asked later, then came the reply SIX!......... boxes I asked thinking brilliant!..... No mackerel he said.

So you know that old chestnut “if you want a job done properly”....... so we went out Susan & I and we got both Deora Dé and Danny’s boat mackerel for Saturday. While catching these we encountered something quiet strange, we were getting cod very aggressively on the feathers just under the boat 3 at a time I never encountered the likes of it before they were on a feeding frenzy working from mid water to just below the surface… The harbour itself was solid with sprat so thick in fact the sounder was loosing the bottom at times but this was not the case outside where we were getting the cod, it made catching mackerel more difficult but we persisted until we had enough!

We were also attacked by large swarms of strange black flies that bite  these have been around with the past couple of weeks but not as bad as this they were floating all round us dead in the water could this have been causing the strange cod behaviour I wonder, the boat was black with them

Anyway Saturday morning arrived and we meet the crew, well we meet Mike Thrussell Snr accompanied by Pat O’Shea of the Commodore Hotel and Mike Hennessey of the SWRFB at Kennedy pier at the prearranged time of 8:45am, no sign of the BAI lads. So Pat went off to round them up which he succeeded in doing after sometime. Pat and Mike Hennessy were to fish on Danny’s boat so we departed the pier and as we already had our mackerel supply we headed straight out to the shark grounds approximately 14 miles from the harbour entrance. On route the lads were put to work readying tackle and put on the “rubby dubby” production line on deck while Mike Thrussell took lots of photographs of the proceedings for an upcoming magazine feature he is working on.

We arrived at the shark grounds and we set about getting our dubby slick to work. The mackerel were solid and Mike Thrussell soon had enough for the crew to last the day. Usually it takes about 2 hours before we get our first hint of a blue but Saturday was different we had one reel screaming after about 20 minutes, the first fish was caught by “Gally” who did very well to play then land it as his “friend” fish pie had put his reel on backwards for devilment but Gally got his own back not long after when he could be heard laughing 20 miles away at Fish Pie who lost the second shark after a 20 minute struggle when his trace suffered a failure. This was a big shark and I doubt the lads will let fish pie forget loosing it anytime soon!

Total for the day was 12 Blues with tackle or knot failure accounting for 6 losses
So the lads have learned a lot I hope! All the crew had a shark with Mike Thrussell Snr boating himself two for his trouble! They also boated several garfish on the float and some whiting from the bottom to pass what little spare time they had between sharks The best fish of the day went to Paddy a novice angler on only his third boat trip, his shark was estimated to weigh over 160lbs, Sean had one estimated over 140lbs, Mike Thrussell’s second and last shark of the day was the smallest of the six landed at around 60lbs so all were good sized blues! All were tagged and released back to the water in excellent condition!

Mike got some excellent pixs which should be appearing in the mag soon

————————————————————————————————————————

Everyone

Tune in to S4C this Thursday at 20:25 for a brand new fishing show.
This is in Welsh, but subtitles are available for those of us to stupid to be bilingual and anyway, it’s fishing, who needs the words.

“Sgota”, starring Julian Lewis Jones the actor (Invictus, The Tudors, Torchwood and many more) is an all new show with the first episode fishing for Blue and Porbeagle Shark aboard White Water with Andrew Alsop in Milford Haven.

Jules may be an actor, but this is a show made by a mad keen angler, for mad keen anglers and whilst it isn’t in my first language (the only Welsh I know has been from road signs!) I can’t wait to see it.

The first series is 6 shows with a new series planned for next year too.

I am very proud to say that Jules is a mate of mine and I wish him every success with the show.

Tightlines

Friday evening after picking Nick up from Chale we met up with Lighty at the car park at Brighstone our chosen venue, but after a quick chat decided, last minute to fish Chale.
By 7pm we had done the slightly slippery climb down and was set up.

One rod was set up with a clip down pennel and bait was either sandeel, squid, mackeral or bluey at distance, the other was a classic running ledger, 6/0 with large lumps of mackeral fished close in.

We fished the tide up till high at 3am with only a few pout, scad to show, though Nick managed the smallest Painted Ray of around a pound and also a big mackeral caught on mackeral at night!
The tide then turned, magic hour and the Bass started to feed with Nick and Lighty getting bites but missing.
Then finally Nick landed one going 2lb 14oz.

Lighty was getting a few good bies but unable to connect, as for me nothing!!

Then I get a quick tap on the rod 2 minutes later the same then nothing, couple more minutes again a quick tap thats when I thought a bloody pout or doggie! But after a few more minutes, the rod tapped pulled round and kept going lifting the rest and other rod with it, still sat on my box I grabbed the rod struck and the fish literally dragged me off the box and several feet down the beach until I loosned my drag, it then shot off taking yards of line.
I screemed to Nick That I was in to a big fish, after a cracking fight I had it close in, Nick wadded out despite only having trainers and jeans on, he was only feet away with the fish making the sea explode with its thrashing, in his head light he saw a huge Bass, well over 10lb estimating around 14lb, but the next wave hit and it was gone!!!!!!!!!!!

To say I was gutted would be an understatement I’ve caught may Bass before but never had one fight like this!!!!!!!!

I put the rod back on the rest and walked off along the beach.
10 minutes I’d calmed down enough to bait up, we fished on till almost dawn but alas no more bites.

Saturday this time the 3 of us got down to Brighstone, after a long walk along the beach looking for a spot we headed back to the start of the beach because all the shingle had been washed away and there was no where to fish at high water, with the tide coming up to the base of the cliffs.

We were set up by 7pm similar rigs and bait as the night before. By 9pm the weed was so bad we couldn’t fish so packed up and headed off to Atherfield.

Well there was still weed here but we fished on until 2 hours before high when it cleared, despite Nick getting 3 big pout it was quiet, until finally around 4am Lighty had a Bass run and with my help was landed without incident, this gong 6lb 2oz.

Well we had another hour but no more bites we called it a night.

A week on Anglesey

I’m just back from a week’s superb family holiday on the glorious Isle of Anglesey. It’s the first time I’ve been to Anglesey, and I made sure I put mine and the lads rods in and a few tackle essentials, mainly spinning and float gear.
The plan was to do family stuff during the day and hopefully get some fishing in during the evenings or very early mornings.

What a glorious place…..

My lads first wrasse…

A bit better fish, but not the biggest of the week!

Another wrasse for my lad..

Silver Bay…...fantastic beach

Porth Dafarch….I think! The scenery is fabulous….

There’s a ton of pictures and a load of waffle…....Full report HERE
