Some friends headed down to a local beach for a spot of flattie fishing last Sunday and were rewarded with a good number of flounders and a couple of turbot to 1lb 8oz. On the strength of that information I said it might be a good idea for a another pal to give the same beach a go on Wednesday… which he dually did. The pictures below were taken on a camera self-timer by Roland McCraw. All fish were taken on simple fish-baits.
Roland did well on his first visit to the beach. He hasn’t supplied any weights, and I know the turbot went back alive. He will probably sign up shortly and fill in all the gaps.
It’s good to see they are still around in numbers. They seem to have thinned out a bit for us on the beaches down towards Holy Island. A few years ago we got them every trip but now they are a rarity. Might have a trip or two further up the coast this summer then.
Steve Burns and some of the guys in the North Berwick Club had some good fish off the same beach. If Stevie B manages to fathom how to get the pics off his camera and onto a computer, I’ll get them posted too for all to see. Fact is that there are several beaches in that area throwing up good turbot, and sooner or later, someone is going to catch a real big one.

i’m going to have a serious go at getting them from the boat this summer (if we get any weather that allows it)
tried before but only got flounders, but to be fair never gave it more than an hour or so…
I managed to get them off Beadnel beach from the yak a couple of years ago. The problem I found was that they only feed on the very edge of the first breaker and I was almost anchored on the shore trying to cast short to get to them. Timing seemed to be crucial as well, the first hour of the flood being prime time. Just as the burried sand eels are poking up out of the sand as the tide starts to flood over them.
last time i tried it was the flood and i went in close enough to hear the people paddling talking about me, we anchored in 6’ of water and cast into the shore. got a couple of wee flounders but nothing else turbot shaped.
this was belhaven, might try again a couple of beaches north…
Hi folks this is my first post on this site. Had a good day when caught my 1st turbo! I was well peased, after chatting to Steve about it I think it was probably about 2 1/2 lb. Can’t wait to have another go. Lovely fish returned alive to get a bit bigger.
Never did manage to get down last week, all ways seems to be something else to be done first…...Then you’ve ran out of days off, they probably would have known I was coming anyway and scampered all ready.
