Might Help?

Taken from the Central Fisheries Board Fish ID book:

The full book can be downloaded from the Cork Small Boats Festival site download page ( http://www.skuaangling.net )

Thanks Jim

I must have learned from others’ mistakes. I haven’t had time to think all those up myself.

Yup Thicklips only seem to have the spot when they are young, over a couple of pounds and it disappears. Having had both on the same session a GG is quite noticeably different especially with the smaller lips and the intensity of the gold spot.

The slim shape and “elongated” head suggest a golden grey, but i think the gold colour is too extensive.  A hybrid is possible of course,
but i suggest a thick lip aberration.  I have had lots of Scottish thick lips with extensive gold colouring, often caught amongst thick kelp,
where, like summer cod, they may develop a more coloured appearance, but none with just a distinct gold spot that would suggest a golden grey.

As you can see they are very distinctive.

I had that one before I spoke to you, that was the pictures that I showed you. I picked the other one up just before I packed up at the back of 6pm
