Opened up the the carb on a 1986 Yamaha 50 DE outboard to give them a clean to find that the top carb has a whiteish, yellow crystalline deposit in the float bowl and on the float. A fair amount in the top carb and lesser amounts in the other two. It’s caused pitting on the alloy surfaces.

Any suggestions as to the cause?

Will try and post a pic later.

TIA

David

I must have learned from others’ mistakes. I haven’t had time to think all those up myself.

David, hiya mate..That looks like salt buildup, from water getting into the fuel…have you got a filter on yer petrol line ?...if not, let me have yer addy, and I’ll get one in the post mate..smile I had big issues with water getting onto my carbs too…got that sorted, with one of the filters…then the water lines getting blocked with the same buildup..:(

Thanks for the offer Norrie, will pm the addy.

All three carbs were gunged up. Need to find a decent solvent to try and clean them else I’ll be stealing bits off my old 40 horse.

You can get a special solvent for cleaning carbs Dave…its wicked stuff so go easy with it. Car shops should stock it.

I was told that a drop of redex in the fuel helps the same as it does with cars but have not tried it yet

It does help reduce deposits when you’re running it regularly but be prepared for a few fumes when cold….. I’m not sure it would help much when an engine is stored for a while but it probably wouldn’t do any harm…. but always best to completely drain the carbs and fuel lines to avoid any build up of wax/chemical when stored.
