Hi All

Can anyone give me some advise on buying spinning lures? With hundreds, if not thousands, on the market how can someone like me, who is new to fishing, know which ones will lure in the fish and not just the fisherman. A few names pop up regularly such as Abu Toby, Dexter Wedge, Eddystone and Redgill eels as well as traditional mackerel spinners but the more I read the more I’m confused by them all. Please help me.

Really depends upon your locationa and target species. Dexter wedges are a good alround, inexpensive lure for distance work. Redgills and plastic worms where ground is rougher and snaggier.

Thanks for your help Bigman….  at the moment I feel like I’ve turned up at the Isle of Man TT having just past my cycling proficiency test… a little out of my depth if you pardon the pun. Having never fished before I’m trying to arm myself with as much information as possible so that my first fishing trip wont be my last.

To be honest it’s probably the wrong time of year to start with lure fishing, better to wait until summer species are around.

Where are you hoping to try fishing?

If you’re thinking of bass then Neil Pead’s article will give you a heads up - http://www.planetseafishing.com/features/read/bass-plugging-basics/

and an in depth report on redgills here - http://www.planetseafishing.com/features/read/burning-rubber/

Silver Stinger, one of the cheapest, caught Mackeral,Pollack,Coalies,Bass,Lizard Fish,Bonito and Barracuda all from the shore, the smaller the lure, the lighter the line,do not be scared of snagging, start from the top then let it sink, lost bigger than landed all on the same lure, just change the hook and spilt rings as the ones you get are too big or crap, and also a decent fixed spool,i.e. shimano does not have to be top of the range, jellies…later.

Hi

Where abouts are you looking to fish?

I plug along the Dorset coast and we have a few regional varients that work well here but not in other places.

Thank you.

Been doing small repairs for a while for friends etc. Then decided a few months ago to start it up properly.

Enjoy all the fiddly bits and pieces as well, I’ve had some great help and instruction from Stan M. of Alba Rods, great bloke and true gent.

Sorry for the off topic as well. Sat here at the present working on a Foo Fighter.
