I must have learned from others’ mistakes. I haven’t had time to think all those up myself.

Good read. Loved the sub-title of ‘Death by Squid’, old squid mings!

It takes a brave person to go anywhere near it, but to actually handle it and prepare as a bait, yuk. pmsl!

If you think squid is bad try rotten cockles! Would clear your boat in no time!

some good advice on that one , i kind of think the same with squid and sandeels any i dont use from a session i refreeze and when i next take them out the freezer i put some oils into them they soak it up when their defrosting,  seems to work for me lot of my better sessions have came on purple squid and mushy sandeels !!
not so keen on old mackeral though especially when you,ve had a good session in the clash the night before !! sick  shut eye  sick

i would imagine that you would really need to wash your hands thoroughly after handling badly decayed bait before you eat your sandwiches as food poisoning could rear it’s ugly head…

keeping some of that antiseptic hand cleaner in your tackle box could be advisable wink

I think theres something to it. We were wreck fishing in March last year and a friend of mine was using the most rancid mackeral Ive ever seen and caught a ling which was 15 1/5lb gutted and also a few cod into double figures when the rest of us were using top quality squid/blueys/rag/lug and scratched about all day. His mackeral really was honking but he swears by it.

He offered me some but I couldn’t bear to even touch it, so he took it back home to refreeze (like you do if you want a quickie divorce).

Hello - My first post (on this forum at least)

I can vouch for the stink that comes from old squid as I’ve had to clean out the back of my landy 5 times now when the liquid from a bag of old squid bait leaked onto carpet and into the well in the boot ...now got a permanemt smell of pine disinfectant with an underlying stink that is taking weeks to go away…  can’t wait till we get some mild weather I’ll probably have to remove all the carpet and steam clean it

Got to agree with the thread though ...been using old bait for a some time now to some success..  especially when the water is well coloured up as I believe in these conditions it outfishes fresh bait.
