Hi

Im looking to buy a Plug/spinning outfit   mainly for use overseas.Ive settled on the Mike Ladle surespin4 10ft rod which casts 15-50grms .
Can anyone suggest a reel to match this,Id be fishing surface plugs mainly and some softplastics for Bluefish,[-Banned Word-], Bream,Trevally etc fish to maybe 30lb.
Dont know much about spinning gear and theres a lot of choice out there.

Thanks Colin

A lot will depend on your budget but the Shimano Stradic is an excellent reel as is the Diawa Procaster. Grauvell also do some good reels. You’ll need something around the 3000 / 4000 size for mono or braid.

If you win the lottery go for the Daiwa Saltiga Z.

Steve had a cracking wee Daiwa but I can’t remember the name and model number, he’ll probably jump in here.

I must have learned from others’ mistakes. I haven’t had time to think all those up myself.

Hiya

I have the older version of the rear drag type http://www.daiwasports.co.uk/products/carp/reels/432/4/regal-plus-regal-bri Used it loads of times over the years with no trouble at all.

Don’t let the word “carp” put you off, a quick dip in some fresh water after each outing & it will serve you for years!

I’m sure Steve’s is an emcast something or other. I used it at the open tackle day and it was a really lovely bit of kit. The drag locked up if required with only a couple of turn of the dial and was very smooth when released. Gearing was superb too…seemed like an ideal reel for your needs.

The reel in question is the Daiwa Exceler Oceano. It is originally designed as a saltwater jigging reel but I use it for everything from light shore work on the bass rod, plugging and spinning on the spinning rod, to float fishing for pollack. On the boat it is good any number of things like lead-head fishing and working small pirks. The thing that swings it for me is that this is a proper saltwater reel that won’t fall to bits in our environment. I work reels hard and I get no more than 6 months out of some reels intended for freshwater.

RRP of the Oceano is £99.00 but shop around. I find it incredible that none of the sea fishing print mags has done a review on this little reel. I think we’ll take care of that shortly.

Hi Steve
I ended up going for this Diawa- http://www.daiwasports.co.uk/products/sea/reels/672/2/sealine-bull-hi similar price but I thought the faster ratio would be handy.
Cheers Colin

Nothing wrong with that Shad. I haven’t used the new Bull Hi yet and would be interested in your opinion.
