Hiya,

OK during the refit of the boat I obtained a 24v windlass for the boat, the problem I have is the boat is all 12v and the charging system is 12v.

Now the electrical system is as follows, 1x 135amphr battery on it’s own circuit for starting each engine, I then have 2 x 85amphr batteries to run all the electrics and lights on the boat, unfortunately to balance the boat out I have 1 x 135 and 1x 85 battery in each hull.

I could connect a 135 & 85 together to give me the 24v but the question is how would I charge the batteries ?

Is there an easy solution to this other than replacing the windlass to a 12v one?

A voltage doubler would be ideal in theory but you require serious current.. I would look into changing the motor on the windlass, Is it a capstan head type using the old truck starting motors with a bit of luck it is Davy?

Put it on flea bay and buy a 12 v one is another idea….

I have some photos here somewhere if I can find them of another cheap option to put hydraulics in your boat using a power steering pump from any small truck and you just need to buy a cheap pot hauler and some hoses! A local pot fisherman had this done on his boat and it was well able for the job.

I stripped it down today.. it’s not a starter motor so that idea is out :(

It’s an idea but I like the look of this one so would like to keep it. I tried to get a 24v alternator to fit my engines .. but they dont do them so i cant set up a complet 24v system on that side of the boat. I did try it running on only 12v and it seems to run quite well so that could be an option smile

sounds interesting, let me know if you manage to find them.
