HI Guys

Just got back from the most amazing angling holiday ever.
A full report will be given onc I have a fully working pc (new job) along with some awesome photos.

In brief:
Typically, Marlin angling is about long hours, days and even weeks staring at the smoke trail from lures dragged behind a boat. If you are lucky you may get one strike in a week’s fishing and you may have a 30/70 chance of getting a hook to stick.

After hearing reports of good fishing in Cape Verde, this time last year I made enquiries to Zak Conde the skipper of the charter boat, “Amelia”, a Bertram 36 based out of Mindelo on the Westrn island of Sao Vincente. A bit of going back anf forth and I booked 5 days angling with Zak and his crew, Marty and Chi for the end of April just gone. I booked up with fellow members of the Sports fishig club of the British Isles, Greg Roskell and Roger Bradbury.

In total we had a phenomenal 27 Atlantic Blue Marlin to 700lb+ for 63 bites.
I managed 10 fish including the 700lb fish on improbably light stand-up gear
Roger took 9 fish to 600lb
Greg took 8 fish to 550lb

All fish were released unharmed with all barr two being tagged.

Now for the best bit.
On day two of our trip the bite was just amazing.
Triple headers, double headers and fish feeding incredibly aggressively meaning they were simply pileing o the lures.

We ended the day with 15 yes FIFETEEN Atlantic Blue Marlin to 550lb for 22 bites.

This has definitely smashed the Cape Verde lure caught record and we believe this is a new world record for the highest number of Atlantic Blue Marlin caught in a single daytime session (unless anyone knows different?).

Pat on the back to me and the other anglers, but the real credit goes to the superb team effort from Zak, Marty and Chi and the great boat Amelia.

More pics to come as I get round to making them smaller..

Tom

Well I don’t know if its really a downside, but next year Dave Lewis might think it will be worth coming along.

Oh, and it’s addictive.

And for some of us lesser mortals it makes catching Bass & Cod just a hint less exciting.

And Zak and Marty won’t let you cast twintails at the Marlin - they keep insisting on best deadbait or top quality (i.e. expensive) Marlin Lures.

Had a text message a few days ago from a couple that fish regular with me (2 local doctors that love fishing ... and football, only downside - Man Utd supporters). They are currently on holiday at Cape Verde.

Nia caught a 30lb dorado toady, off trolling for tuna tomorrow, watched the LFC and MU game in an Irish bar - poor result but enjoying it here, see you soon.

May give it a go one day!

I must have learned from others’ mistakes. I haven’t had time to think all those up myself.

Belated news

For the photos he took while on that holiday,  Tom Bettle has won 3rd place in the Billfish Foundation photo contest.  Ingrid Marie Vincent Andersen (some of you may have seen her photos) got first place.

The (3rd) prize is not very valuable*,  but it is a sign of esteem.

* actually, nor are the 1st or 2nd prizes.
