How to Tie a Pirk Casting Rig

by David Proudfoot

Pirk Casting Rig

The pirk casting rig is used for light pirking where the rig is cast away from the drift. It allows the terminal tackle to fish vertical for longer.

Pirk Casting Rig Components

Main Body

1 x Trace Swivel

1 x Breakaway Fastlink

Approx. 2 metre length 30-50lb BS main line

Snood

1 x 2/0 – 6/0 hook to accommodate plastic worm or Redgill eel or Eddtstone lure

The Rig Body

  1. Tie on the swivel to the trace length and form a cut blood loop approx 200mm long; a water knot or a three-way swivel can also be used to carry the snood dropper.
  2. Tie the hook to the end of the cut snood.
  3. Attach the pirk to the bottom of the trace length using a Breakaway Fastlink. Using an assist hook on the pirk helps prevent tackle losses but a treble hook on the tail can be used instead.
  4. For casting rigs a redgill, gummi mac or plastic worm is normally used on the dropper but a “killer” rig for heavier vertical pirking can be formed by using a muppet.

Additional droppers can also be added to allow multiple droppers to be used.
