Shaun Cumming locks eyes on Go Angling’s latest free DVD shot out of Holyhead, North Wales.
Choosing the right boat and skipper can be tough for novices and experienced anglers alike, especially when sampling an area for the first time. But for those planning a charter fishing trip in North Wales, the choice has just got a whole lot easier. Gethyn Owen skipper of ‘My Way’ out of Holyhead in Angelsey has cut a DVD brochure giving a unique insight into the fishing to be enjoyed… and it makes for good viewing, even if some of the accompanying music makes you want to jump off the nearest high building! The 20-minute DVD takes you on an all-action fishing journey coloured with fish, fish and even more fish. Footage opens with the boat glinting in the early morning sunshine as she cuts a path to the fishing grounds. An impressive fish photo album then showcases big wrasse, feisty pollack, head-shaking smoothhounds and rays among many more species there for the taking off Holyhead.
Some clearly fabulous fishing aside, observations would include: smart spacious boat; a hands-on skipper; no shortage of help and advice; great atmosphere and plenty tea and biscuits all-round. There’s useful on-screen information and novices are clearly well considered and catered for in the operation. Tackle can be provided to those who require it… and not the rubbish gear that novice anglers have to put up with on many boats either. As you might expect with a successful angler/skipper in charge, My Way is kitted out with Abu Phaser rods and top notch 7500C3 multiplier reels, while custom terminal rigs and quality bait are carried to correctly cover all species eventualities.
If the tope fishing segment doesn’t inspire you to get on a boat and have ago then the chances are that you’re quite dead already! Searing ratchet runs, panicked expressions traded for gleaming smiles, and bush-wacked anglers are exactly what I believe fishing to be all about. Not yet inspired? Then the stills of some stunning caught-and-released monster fish, including a 79lb tope, a 19lb 2oz spurdog and a 25lb 6oz smoothhound should do the trick.
Gethyn Owen is a qualified angling coach who has fished at the very highest level in the Welsh international boat fishing team. His enthusiasm, expertise and conversation-minded attitude are clear throughout this DVD. As the god-awful music fades, I’m tempted to get straight on the blower and arrange a trip on ‘My Way’.
