Sizeable Cod On The Lancashire Coast

by Jordan Russell

There have been some decent sized cod about on the Lancashire coast. Although not common on north west shores everyone has their fingers crossed that these popular fish hang around for the rest of the winter.

Best baits at the moment are black lugworm or yellow tails fished on big hook pennel rigs. The cod are mainly being caught of rough ground marks, rocky areas, from Cleveleys to Fleetwood at either high water or low water.

Fleetwood and District Sea Angling Club fished their Christmas club match, a very good attendance of thirty anglers. Good job there was not a lot more as it was packed between the cafe at Cleveleys all the way to the hospital. Conditions looked great with a south westerly wind ensuring it was rough but fishable and not much weed.

Unfortunately what looked like a good sea for cod, did not produce, apart from the one fish. Fishing was very slow mostly whiting and one good flounder for Andy Young.

Congratulations to the winner Mark Taylor who had a 42 cm cod and a whiting for a total of 39 points. Mark fished near to Five Bar Gate.

Dave Brown was out at low water on a rough ground mark. He struggled to get through the dogfish having one every cast on the ebb. However he then managed a dogfish, codling double on his pennel rig with a few more dogs and whiting on the flood.
