Corby’s Paul Marshall was the runaway winner of Skegness Pier Angling Club’s (SPAC) latest match held in the tidal River Nene at Sutton Bridge. Using fresh peeler crab for bait, he caught 8 flounders and 4 silver eels for a winning weight of 7lb 13oz. His best flounder tipped the scales at 1lb 3oz to take the heaviest flatfish prize. A long way behind in second place was Croxton’s Dave Burr, with 3 small bass and a silver eel for 1lb 11oz. Filling the frame in third place with 1lb 9oz was Wrangle’s Paul Cridland, who also won the heaviest round fish award with a 14oz bass. Paul Marshall made a good day complete by easily beating Dave Burr to progress to the 3rd Round of the inaugural SPAC knockout competition.

A number of SPAC members took part in Humber Sea Angling Club’s Smoothound Open, held from beaches north of Chapel. Top match anglers from all over the country make the annual pilgrimage to fish this popular match and although the entry was down this year, there were still 72 anglers hoping to land a big cash prize! Unfortunately the smoothounds were conspicuous by their absence and SPAC’s in-form Paul Marshall used his local knowledge to win for the second weekend on the trot, with 4 flounders measuring 118cm.

The next SPAC match will be held on Sunday 21st Aug from 8:30am till 12:30pm at Drake Road, with Club members fishing for the Mrs Wheatcroft Cup. There is also an open section and a mixed pairs event, which non-members are welcome to participate in.
